Metallica to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Posted by JonesK On March - 31 - 2009

metallicaIn less than a week, metal icons Metallica will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  As an added bonus for fans, it is said that all four original band members; James Hetfield (vocals, guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Kirk Hammett (background vocals, guitar) and Jason Newsted (bass guitar); will also be performing together at the ceremony.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1981, Metallica rose to become one of the biggest and most influential heavy metal bands of our time.  Their 1983 debut album, Kill ‘Em All is widely considered one of the first thrash-metal albums.  Their subsequent albums Ride the Lightning (1984), Master of Puppets (1986) and …And Justice for All (1988), saw the band expanding not only their sound, but their audience as well.  Their self-titled 1991 album (also known as the black album) made them one of the biggest bands in the world, with a long run at #1 on the Billboard albums chart and selling over 22 million copies worldwide.  Last year, Metallica released Death Magnetic, which also debuted atop the Billboard charts and was one of 2008′s biggest-selling albums.

The 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer inductees were chosen by the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.  Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Hall, twenty-five years after their first recording is released.  This is only Metallica’s second year of eligibility for this honor.

In addition to being honored at the ceremony, each inducted artist is commemorated at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland Ohio, which serves as a monument to rock and roll’s impact on our culture.  These inductees will be honored with an exhibit and film that serve to tell the story of modern music.

On April 4th, 2009, the Induction Ceremony will be retuning home to Cleveland, after more than a decade being held in New York.  The Ceremony will be broadcast live on Fuse TV.

New Rancid Album Out in June

Posted by cristóvão On March - 30 - 2009

rancid-ltdfRancid have revealed both the new album title and it’s release date, but fans can get so much more come April 7th.

Let the Dominoes Fall will be available for purchase on June 2nd, 2009 but Rancid have recently updated their MySpace page with a new widget which will automatically update on April 7th. On that date, the widget will begin playing the first track, titled “Last One to Die” from the forthcoming album.

For those of you who actually still use MySpace, you can add this widget to your own MySpace profile and anytime someone uses it from your page to add it themselves, you’ll get an additional entry into their contest. The top 25 people will win a pair of tickets to see them perform with Rise Against on tour this summer.

Make sure to follow the official Off the Dial MySpace page as we’ve embedded the widget for use there. Hopefully, more tracks will be revealed on said widget before the album launches.

U2 Calls On Excellent Openers

Posted by cristóvão On March - 27 - 2009

u2-360Pre-sale for U2‘s North American tour went on sale this week (sorry kids, unless you hold fan club memberships, we don’t have a password for you) but the real news is who is slated to open up for the Irish rock-monsters.

Although there have been few confirmations by the band themselves, there is plenty of talk of who will support them on this tour. Glasvegas and Damien Dempsey are confirmed openers for their July 24th Dublin show while Kaiser Chiefs and Republic of Loose will support the July 25th concert in the same city.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Snow Patrol and Elbow will also be opening shows in Europe while Snow Patrol, Black Eyed Peas and (this will really get readers interested) Muse are expected to join U2 on the North American leg of the tour. NYC/Chicago site Consequence of Sound discovered Muse‘s apparently inclusion at the September 24th NYC concert at Giants Stadium on Ticketmaster when the pre-sale began earlier this week. A quick look through the official U2 web site show little more confirmation than those stated above at the Dublin shows.

Oddly enough, when it was discovered that British alt-rock act Elbow would be opening, it was merely days after having received this video from an Off the Dial reader;

For those who don’t know much about the band, they’ve been around for nearly 20 years, have release four studio albums (including last year’s “the Seldom Seen Kid“) and have been touted by Coldplay when front-man Chris Martin revealed in 2005 that their single “Fix You” is a copy of the above song, “Grace Under Pressure” from Elbow‘s 2003 album “Cast of Thousands“. Gotta love plagaristic praise.

CD Review: Propagandhi ~ Support Caste

Posted by cristóvão On March - 26 - 2009

~ G7 Welcoming Committee/Smallman Records

propagandhi-supporting-casteSocio-political Manitoba punk band Propagandhi have returned with Supporting Caste, an album which proves these guys are far from getting old and tired.

I quickly discovered that writing a review for this album would prove to be a very difficult task. The content is so rich with themes of the brutality of war, the sad state of our society, the virtues of vegetarianism (listen to “Humane Meat“), the use of hockey to promote patriotism (found in the utterly excellent “Dear Coache’s Corner“) and the list goes on and on. As with past albums, Propagandhi include additional content with this album in the form of quotes and suggested readings relevant to the lyrics within. This challenges the listener to dig deeper into the messages of each song and engage the topic at hand.

Musically, Supporting Caste is ferocious (immediately starting with “Night Letters“), often with blistering guitar solos and runaway train rhythms. Songs like “Incalculable Effects” hit hard with both it’s grinding guitar riffs and growling vocals about drugs and child-abandonment. What better way to end the record than than on “Last Will & Testament” with it’s extremely creative, lengthy instrumental lead-in and facetious message of submission.

Simply put, Supporting Caste may prove to be one of the more important albums of our time. One may not agree with some or all of the topics Propagandhi touch on but you cannot deny that these are the very discussions we should all be having to determine the future of our well-being. No matter how many times I re-write this review to try and capture it’s excellence, the only true way to find out is to listen for yourself.

Tool Confirm Summer Tour; Lend Credence to Lollapalooza Rumours

Posted by cristóvão On March - 25 - 2009

toolsitelogoI’m sure I’ve gotten the attention of Tool fans with that headline but it’s true. The official Tool web site has confirmed that the band will be heading out on tour this summer. No dates have been announced as according to the site, they are still finalizing everything. There’s no indication if this is a world-wide tour, North American or otherwise.

This announcement certainly lends credence to the vast amount of Lollapalooza 2009 line-up rumours rampant across the internet. The official Lollapalooza facebook page has indicated that the official line-up will be announced in early April even though early-bird tickets go on sale March 31st. Tool is one of many bands rumoured to be on this years bill including co-headliners Jane’s Addiction, the Killers, Kings of Leon, Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode. According to NYC/Chicago Music Blog Consequence of Sound, other “confirmed” acts include Ben Folds, the Decemberists, Kaiser Chiefs, Lou Reed, the Ravonettes and Neko Case while rumoured acts include Ben Harper & Relentless 7, Dan Auerbach, Deerhunter, Eels, Franz Ferdinand, the Gaslight Anthem, OK Go, Peter Bjorn & John, Ra Ra Riot, Rancid, Rise Against and Sam Roberts Band among others.

Stay tuned to Off the Dial for confirmed Tool tour dates and the officially announced Lollapalooza line-up.
