CD Review: Regular John ~ The Peaceful Atom is a Bomb

Posted by show On August - 31 - 2009

Written by: Andy Stewart

Regular John ~ the Peaceful Atom is a BombHailing from Sydney, Australia, the band Regular John is nothing if not blunt and honest, describing their sound as “a bulldozer going through the crowd a Woodstock”. The band is made up of Brock Tengstrom (guitars/vocals), Ryan Adamson (guitar/vocals), Caleb Goman (bass/vocals) & Ryan “Macca” MacDonald (drums) and has been together for several years spending most of their time building a following and developing their sound.

Their debut album The Peaceful Atom is a Bomb is an example of good old fashioned rock and roll, which is both its strength and Achilles heel all at once.

On the positive, this album is loud and hard hitting like any good rock album should be. Songs like “Transmitter”,”Language” & “We Spell Love…” come crashing through your speakers with a healthy mix of desperation and confidence. Proving that straight ahead rock and roll is alive and well somewhere in the world.

At times however, the songs come across as too old school for their own good; which leaves them sounding more like a tribute to grunge, than fresh rock and roll. “O Furtuna” comes across from the opening lyrics as late 90s grunge that just lacked the same edge as what else was out there. Too slow and tired sounding make this one of the weaker tracks on the album.

Having said that the album still stands as an example of what a solid rock album should be. The band knows how a rock song should be delivered, with equal parts attitude and volume. Albums like this are becoming harder to find as ‘rock’ continues to evolve, and the album as a whole delivers a solid sound which won’t leave the listener disappointed.

Produced by Tim Powles (drummer for The Church) on the Difrnt Music label via Universal Music, the album is out now. Check out the video for “Language” below;

CD Review: Dolores O’Riordan ~ No Baggage

Posted by lmelvin On August - 30 - 2009

Written by: Laura Melvin

Dolores O'Riordan ~ No BaggageWhen a lead singer leaves his or her band to pursue a solo career, they do so to explore different styles and sounds not associated with their former band.  For Dolores O’Riordan, formerly of The Cranberries, her second solo album offers a mature, softer, more introspective vision of the singer compared to her politically charged “Zombie” days.

Aptly named No Baggage, the album is an extremely self-reflective look at O’Riordan’s personal battles and her life’s journey to become the woman she is today.  It took a stint living in the Ontario wilderness for her to figure out who she was after The Cranberries, and when it was finally time to record, she turned to Ontario producer Dan Brodbeck to help her put together an album she could be proud of.

If you’re looking for “Cranberry” Dolores O’Riordan, this album probably isn’t for you.  Her distinctive voice with that unique Irish waiver is unmistakable, but she’s missing that edgy ‘voice-crack’ and growl we here in early The Cranberries songs.  But, have no fear Cranberries-fans!  In a clever marketing ploy, O’Riordan officially announced a Cranberries reunion tour the day No Baggage was released.  O’Riordan, Noel Hogan, Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawler will reunite to form the group that made them famous.  The band plans to start their tour in November, playing their greatest hits, songs off of O’Riordan’s new album, and a few new songs they plan to write.

Noel Calls it Quits on Oasis!

Posted by ogcin On August - 29 - 2009

Written by: Nic Gouveia

Oasis @ WembleyA week after cancelling their V Festival Chelmsford stop, it looks that Oasis is no more after an “altercation” at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris, France last night.

With mere minutes before Oasis was to take the stage, screens at both ends of the main stage showed the message: “As a result of an altercation within the band, the Oasis gig has been canceled.”

Bloc Party, who were scheduled to play before Oasis announced that the Manchester rockers would not be taking the stage. Most in the crowd laughed thinking it a jab for the missed gig a week earlier. It was no laughing matter after the message flashed on screen that indeed the show had been canceled.

Scottish singer Amy Macdonald, who also preformed at the Rock en Seine, tweeted: “canceled again with one minute to stage time!!! Liam smashed Noel’s guitar, huuuge fight! I have never heard such loud booing! It was terrifying. I am gutted. I feel so bad for all the fans.”

Later, on the official Oasis website, Noel Gallagher confirmed: “It’s with some sadness and great relief I tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

“Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.”

So speak up Off the Dial faithful… Will this split last? Is this the end of Oasis?

Video of the Day: Modest Mouse ~ “King Rat”

Posted by cristóvão On August - 28 - 2009

Modest Mouse ~ No One's First and You're NextToday’s Video of the Day is absolutely incredible. Off the Dial reader and local musician Jzero Schuurman alerted me to this video by Modest Mouse that was released earlier this month. The song, “King Rat” is fantastic and the animation, with it’s blatant and hard-hitting message, is so unbelievably great it’s beyond words. Here’s the catch (pardon the pun); the concept for this video was dreamed up by none other than Heath Ledger.

The story goes that Ledger approached Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse about a video for the song back in 2007. His vision was to shed some light on the illegal commercial whale hunts that occur off the coast of his native Australia every year and with just one viewing of this video, he sent the message home in brutal yet beautiful and sobering fashion.

Of course, we all know that Ledger sadly passed away in January of 2008. The video was completed by a film and music outfit that Ledger was partnered with called the Masses. They, and the band, naturally have dedicated the video in his memory and it is credited as being directed by Ledger.

I’m not sure how long this video will stay up so if you have troubles seeing it, make sure to see the official video (which Sony has disabled the embed code for…jerks) on YouTube.

Make sure to read our review of No One’s First, and You’re Next, the EP on which “King Rat” appears.

EP Review: Dog Is Blue ~ …Makes Ghost Noises

Posted by lmelvin On August - 27 - 2009

Written by: Laura Melvin

Dog Is Blue ~ Makes Ghost NoisesI often find that mainstream music lacks the poetry of indie.  There’s something about recording an album solo in a tiny city apartment that brings out the musician’s inner poet.  That’s what you get with Toronto musician Paul Watson, a.k.a., Dog Is Blue.  Love, aging, and mortality provide plenty of fuel for clever, poetic song writing on this quirky self-released album titled … Makes Ghost Noises.

The abstract band name is fitting for this album’s abstract metaphors.  “Alligator Song”, as an example, compares trying to win over a lover to wrestling an alligator.  It may seem like an odd and ill-fitting metaphor for relationships, but who hasn’t felt like pleasing a lover was as futile and exhausting as wrestling an alligator?  Certainly creates some interesting imagery.

The quirkiness doesn’t stop with metaphors, though.  Paul Watson of Dog Is Blue considers his music “Ghost-Folk”, which has been described as a modern take on the folk genre.  Watson had this to say about his unique music category:

“It’s something I came up with for a number of reasons: First, there are a lot of ghost/death references in the album, though I wouldn’t say it’s somber by any means. Second, I didn’t really think the music fit perfectly in any of the pre-determined genres, not quite folk, not quite pop, etc. and, third, musical genres are often such an arbitrary thing. People are so obsessed with classifying everything into neat packages that I just wanted to make something up for the hell of it. Of course, at the end of the day it was just a fun term that I felt like bandying about.”

Death has long been a muse for poets and musicians alike, and results in some seriously insightful quotes from Dog Is Blue.  So, I’ll leave you with a line from “Borrowing Days”, the first track on …Makes Ghost Noises; “Let us play our roles just send each other on our way/Meet again in the dust at the end of our borrowing days.”

Drive Faster Set to Speed Across the Landscape

Posted by cristóvão On August - 27 - 2009

Written by: Chris Andrade

Drive FasterToronto quartet Drive Faster‘s story actually began a while back in Calgary with the group Supernal. They achieved moderate success and a fair deal of attention with airplay on both college and commercial radio alike, plus tours across North America and opening spots for Angels & Airwaves and Sum41.

The band then moved to the Ontario capital and underwent a line-up change that now includes vocalist Angela Elizabeth, guitarist Tony Gare, drummer Michael Holbrook (formerly of Calgary group Creature Republic) and bassist Jon Marck. Since then, the four have been hard at work recording and getting their name out.

They’ve already garnered some attention from the likes of Andréanne Sasseville on Sirius Satellite Radio, performed to a packed crowd for Canadian Music Week last February and recorded the track “Analog” at Metalworks with producers Moe Berg (Pursuit of Happiness) and Lawrence Currie (Sloan, the Cliks).

They are currently in the process of recording their debut EP at their own downtown Toronto rehearsal space. The record is being produced entirely by the band and should be out soon. Holbrook was kind enough to give Off the Dial one of the tracks in advance (called “Suitcase”) and we’ve included it here for all to listen. Keep an eye out for more news on Drive Faster as things progress!

I don’t think Kurt would give a shit

Posted by show On August - 26 - 2009

Written by: Andy Stewart

After reading an Eenie Meenie Records affiliated blog, I tasked our very own Andy Stewart to sound off on the topic at hand. Although lots of people are crying foul at the inclusion of Kurt Cobain‘s likeness, Andy has another take on the situation. Enjoy! ~ Chief Editor, Chris Andrade

Guitar Hero 5So I read a post by Adrian G. on minymoe’s blog today about the upcoming Guitar Hero 5 release which is set to include the likeness of Kurt Cobain. Not surprisingly, Adrian does not feel that this is at all in line with Kurt and his anti-corporate stance, and Adrian will not be buying the next installment because it is so at odds with everything Cobain stood for and it offends him (her?).

Now, I’m not here to go after Adrian’s opinion as it is most likely the same as countless other Nirvana fans and I’ll try to keep the personal shots to a minimum but here’s why I disagree with the post.

First, being included in Guitar Hero isn’t selling out, it’s simply selling. Radio holds no power. CDs are a dying technology and the steady popularity of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises is simply one of the most effective ways to get music out to the masses. Cobain died in 1994. Fifteen years before the current buying population were even born. Without things like Guitar Hero these kids will most likely have no idea about Nirvana, or Soundgarden, or Blondie, or the Pretenders, or David Bowie, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Those that hate this so much should think about the fact that it’s exposing their beloved heroes to an entirely new demographic of listeners, without whom the bands of our youths will fade away over time.

Second, let’s be honest. Selling out lost its power when Bob Dylan hawked Cadillac. Kind of like when he went electric; while shocking, the world kept turning. While Nirvana might have done all they could to retain their indie cred and spew about their hatred of the corporate machine it doesn’t change the fact that they were…wait for it…part of the corporate machine! Don’t believe me? How about you wander over to your CD shelf and take a good look at that copy of their MTV Unplugged gig. Nothing screams anti-establishment like doing a one-off gig put on by MTV, and following in the footsteps of those artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, Poison, 10,000 Maniacs, Eric Clapton & R.E.M. (artists and pitchmen alike) that did the same thing to reach a wider audience via mainstream channels.

And while we’re being honest why not admit that sometimes there is nothing wrong with a little corporate polish. That MTV Unplugged album has stood the test of time as one of their best albums, which showcased their ability to play music and not just let their grunge flag fly. The Meat Puppets never made it huge because they were never marketed properly; talent had nothing to do with it. You can bet your ass they would have taken any deal with the devil that was offered to them if it meant untold fame and riches.

Third, take a close look at the Cobain character in the video. It could just as easily be Wes Scantlin from Puddle of Mudd as it is Cobain. If it wasn’t for the green sweater and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” as the track nobody would think it was him. So what does that mean? NOTHING! IT’S A GAME!!! Who the fuck cares!! Saying you’re going to boycott a game which is fun, celebrates music and lets people enjoy their favourite and newly favourite songs because an anti-corporate rock star is in it is retarded. Did you get upset when Tom Morello licensed his image and Rage songs? He’s so fucking anti-establishment he bleeds granola and hugs for crissakes!

And I know it’s not Cobain that licensed the image, and that’s what makes it ‘wrong’ but if he’d been so concerned about protecting his image perhaps he should have stuck around longer to protect it. The cold hard truth though, is that because he left the world prematurely he can’t control his image, and we can only guess what Kurt Cobain circa-2009 might say or do. He might have gone the route of Rod Stewart for all we know and recorded nothing but hits from the Great American Songbook.

Instead, those that control his image and catalogue felt this was the way that he’d live on forever and they’re right. Letting Kurt come to life in this game is a way for a new generation of fans to experience (perhaps more so than our generation ever could) a man of exceptional talent and tremendous pain like never before.  So get down off the soapbox, pick up your crappy plastic guitar and enjoy the music.

I for one can’t wait for the next instalment to come out, just like I can’t wait for Rock Band Beatles to come out. Why? Because the music on both will be awesome and for a few fleeting moments I get to fool myself into thinking I’m something more than I am…a rock star.

Agree or disagree? Tell me what you think.

Guitar Hero 5 is set for release next month and there’s a bit of stir over the inclusion of Kurt Cobain‘s likeness in the game. It will feature a live version of Nirvana‘s “Lithium” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, which you can see here played in what appears to be Expert level;

Personally, I’m excited about having the songs in the game. As for Cobain’s likeness; I am barely upset by it although his likeness is kinda creepy. Not because he’s dead and eerily brought back to life in animated form but because the animation although good, is off. There’s something very strange and unsettling about it (and you’ll be glad to know I refrained from cracking some bad corpse joke here). Interesting none-the-less.

Stay tuned for a rebuttal by our own Andy Stewart towards all those who are demonizing the inclusion of Cobain’s likeness in the game!

JET
Shaka Rock

www.jettheband.com
Dist: EMI Music Canada

JET - Shaka Rock

With their previous releases — 2003’s Get Born and 2006’s Shine On- JET broke out of their native Australia and established themselves as a multi-platinum, international success story, merging the charisma and energy of classic rock and roll with just enough punk swagger and contemporary flair to create something uniquely theirs. Here at last is a band that’s returning the cool to rock and roll. 2009’s Shaka Rock reveals new dimensions of JET while never losing the raw roots of Get Born or the grace and melody of Shine On, which together went on to make Jet an international band of style and substance. The first single off Shaka Rock is “She’s A Genius.”

IMOGEN HEAP
Ellipse

Dist: Sony Music Canada

Imogen Heap - Ellipse (Deluxe Version)

Following the success of her previous album Speak For Yourself, Imogen is back with her third solo album Ellipse, finding inspiration from her writing trip which took her to Maui, Tasmania, China and Japan. A multi-instrumentalist with what seems to be limitless creative ability, the culmination of eccentric style and a sound that is unlike anything else, Imogen is an artist who isn’t afraid to experiment with her music. Her new album once again seduces you into a world where fantasy and reality meet in an atmospheric dream state. Imogen is, in all senses, an experience. Ellipse features the single “First Train Home.”

COLLECTIVE SOUL
Collective Soul

www.collectivesoul.com
Dist: Warner Music Canada

Collective Soul - Collective Soul (Bonus Track Version)

Collective Soul gained a special place in the hearts of music lovers when they burst onto the scene in 1993 with the rock anthem “Shine.” Seven #1 Rock Hits, 4 Platinum Plus albums and 10 million total albums sold since, Collective Soul return with their most ambitious album to date, Collective Soul (Rabbit). Recorded in just 45 days in their home studio in Georgia and produced by Ed Roland himself, the album features their most mainstream songs ever recorded. It’s hard to imagine that the band has been making music for nearly 2 decades. Hard that is, until you turn on the radio and find yourself singing along to “Staring Down,” the new single from the band’s upcoming album Collective Soul.

BLACKIE JACKETT JR.
Whiskey And Tears
www.myspace.com/blackiejackettjr
Dist: Warner Music Canada

Blackie Jackett Jr. - Whiskey and Tears

Blackie Jackett Jr. is the critically acclaimed alt country side project from multi-platinum selling Finger Eleven’s Rick Jackett and James Black. Booze, love gone bad, losing yourself on the highway … these are the perennial topics of traditional country music, and the recurring themes of the aptly titled debut album by Blackie Jackett Jr., Whiskey and Tears. Eschewing the slick sound of Nashville pop in favor of the time-honored tunesmithing of Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt, Lefty Frizzell, and others, the album’s emotional intensity and faithfulness to honky-tonk tenets comes as a pleasant surprise in a musical atmosphere that’s too often about chasing the next throwaway hit single.

ARCTIC MONKEYS
Humbug

www.arcticmonkeys.com
Dist: Outside
Arctic Monkeys - Humbug

Humbug, the 3rd album from Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys finds the band brimming with vim, vigor and new ideas. They brought in a new production accomplice, Josh Homme (Queens of The Stone Age), for some of the recording. He generously hosted and produced tracks with them at his Joshua Tree studio. Then they rejoined forces with James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco), producer of the previous 2 Arctic Monkeys and Last Shadow Puppets albums, in Brooklyn, NY to complete the tracks that became Humbug. The album is heavier and lush than previous albums but still full of the Monkeys usual punch and vitality. The current single is “Crying Lightning.”

DOLORES O’RIORDAN
No Baggage

www.doloresoriordan.com
Dist: Universal Music Canada

Dolores O’Riordan is probably best known as the incredible and unique voice that led Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries to international success in the early nineties. Dolores’s work with The Cranberries, however, is only part of the legacy in music she continues to create. In 2007, Dolores released her first solo album entitled Are You Listening? which chronicled with deep sincerity the chapters in her life following her departure from The Cranberries. It wasn’t long, however, until she started full time work on her second solo project. She spent the duration of 2008 writing and recording music and now we finally see the results in her latest album entitled No Baggage featuring the single “The Journey.”

NEW TALES TO TELL: A TRIBUTE TO LOVE AND ROCKETS

Blaqk Audio - New Tales to Tell - A Tribute to Love and Rockets (Bonus Track Version)

“Love and Rockets are many things,” says Black Francis, aka Frank Black, whose contribution to the album is a version of “All In My Mind.” “But what they are more than anything are agents of that mysterious force known as rock n’ roll, a force loved by many but understood by so few.”
New Tales To Tell, A Tribute To Love and Rockets is produced by Christopher The Minister & Phil Jaurigui and the album art by Shepherd Fairey. The artist lineup of New Tales To Tell: A Tribute To Love And Rockets, includes Puscifer, the Flaming Lips, Blaqk Audio, Monster Magnet, the Dandy Warhols, Better Than Ezra and many more.

YOUNG GALAXY
Invisible Republic

Young Galaxy - Invisible Republic

Finding beauty in the everyday may sometimes be a tricky task, but the best art does just that – holds up a mirror to the small yet significant details that make up our lives. In an era where the world seems to move at warp speed and incisive reflection is limited to the latest blog post, Montreal band Young Galaxy’s songs remind us of the richness of our universal experiences – from love and loss to despair and hope. Invisible Republic, Young Galaxy’s sophomore release, builds upon transforming the mundane into the fantastic – catchy hooks build into epic crescendos, while political and ethical concerns share space with emotional observations.

STILL LIFE STILL
Girls Come Too
www.myspace.com/stilllifestill
Dist: EMI Music Canada

Still Life Still - Girls Come Too

Still Life Still formed nearly a decade ago in the Toronto suburb of East York when the band’s members had just hit double digits and were barely tall enough to hold up their instruments. Brendon Saarinen (guitar/vocals), Eric Young (guitar/vocals), Derek Paulin (bass), Aaron Romaniuk (drums) and Josh Romaniuk (keys/percussion) have a bond that is instantly exposed with their live performances, which culminate in a pogo-frenzy of fans. Still Life Still’s debut album, Girls Come Too, is produced by Martin Davis Kinack and Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) and follows up their 3-song Pastel EP released in June.

SMOKEY ROBINSON
Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

Smokey Robinson - Time Flies When You're Having Fun

The legendary Smokey Robinson returns with a new CD entitled Time Flies When You’re Having Fun. Smokey fully intends to continue his wonderfully weaved musical legacy with an album of new material featuring the first single – a cover of “Don’t Know Why.” Robinson Is joined on the album by Carlos Santana, India Arie and Joss Stone.
“The title of this CD depicts my life,” shares Robinson, “because I love my life. I love the fact that I’m extremely blessed, because I get a chance to live a life that I love. I get a chance to do a craft that I love. I get a chance to do a job that I love.”

RYAN DAHLE
Irrational Anthems
www.ryandahle.com
Dist: Fontana North

Dahle is adept at crafting obliquely hook-laden melodies and fractured lyrics, first as songwriter for The Age of Electric and then as frontman for Limblifter. Since then, he’s practically (and now literally) lived in the studio, collecting gear, experimenting with production techniques, searching for new sounds and working with well-known Canadian musicians like The Manvils and Hot Hot Heat. Despite the fact that Irrational Anthems is the first album Dahle has released under his own name, it’s not strictly a solo affair. Megan Bradfield (The Salteens, A.C. Newman) contributes bass, double-bass, cello, clarinet and vocals, and Dahle’s brother Kurt is back, bringing both his experience in indie-pop sensations The New Pornographers and the type of intuition that only brothers can share.

MATISYAHU
Light

www.matisyahuworld.com
Dist: Sony Music Canada

Matisyahu - Light

Few artists make an impact as complete as the one Matisyahu made with his Top 40 smash “King Without a Crown”. Here was a true original, the song announced—a Hasidic Jewish musician from New York City singing Reggae songs about his religious devotion. Fans responded to this one-of-a-kind voice, too, driving Youth, Matisyahu’s Grammy-nominated 2006 studio disc, to the top spot on Billboard’s Reggae albums chart. True originals, though, don’t stay put for long, and his bold new album, Light, is anything but safe. Produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Sublime, the Strokes), the 14-track collection covers a dizzying amount of stylistic ground, from dancehall (“Smash Lies”) and ska–inflected New Wave (“We Will Walk”) to laidback pop-rock (“So Hi So Lo”) and acoustic folk-soul (“I Will Be the Light”).

DANIEL MERRIWEATHER
Love & War

www.danielmerriweather.com
Dist: Sony Music Canada

Daniel Merriweather - Love & War

Daniel Merriweather, is a 27 year-old Australian who lent his old-soul voice on the track “Stop Me” on Mark Ronson’s eclectic album Version. Daniel and Mark Ronson have collaborated once again, and the finished product is the beautiful album Love And War. Daniel Merriweather’s music pulses with gritty hip-hop beats, 60’s soul keyboards and horns, warm textures of acoustic and electric guitar, cinematic string arrangements, all anchored by Merriweather’s combustible vocals. Love & War features the introductory single “Change”.

FUN.
Aim And Ignite

Fun - Aim and Ignite (Bonus Track Version)

fun. have crafted something special indeed, a contemporary rethinking of classic 70s pop, where ornate arrangements and inspired orchestrations meet present-day rock ‘n’ roll. Nate Ruess, late of The Format, has teamed up with ex-Anathallo multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost and Steel Train’s Jack Antonoff, resulting in their ingenious debut, Aim And Ignite. The trio melds a stunning array of diverse inspirations – spanning Broadway to The Beach Boys, Nilsson Schmilsson to Pinkerton – into an irresistible collection of freewheeling pop songwriting.
