Coltrane Motion – The Fusion Avatar Of Indie-rock

coltranemotionAt a time when there is a thin line between fusion and remix, here is a band that dishes out a refreshing variety of fusion music. Coltrane Motion, the indie-rock band that shot into fame in 2007 through their album Songs about Music, has just released its second album. Unusual for an Indie-rock album, it is poignantly titled The Year Without a Summer.

Both the albums have some common ingredients. In both the albums, almost all numbers have subtle undertones of vintage music of the sixties and heavy doses of synthesizer-created sounds. In other words, these songs are the sixties’ vintage stuff wrapped in the latest synthesized music. The result is a heady mix of soul-searching lyrics and foot-tapping rhythms.

The Men Behind Coltrane Motion

There are two men behind the success of the band. The first one is Michael Bond. He is the lead singer of the band. Matt Dennewitz, the second one, is the guitarist and music arranger. Other than their passion towards original vintage music, they share a common home town as well. Both these men hail from Ohio

The music of Coltrane Motion can be compared to the meeting place of two tiny and untamed forest streams of music. The first is the dance music and heart-touching lyrics of the sixties and, to some extent, the nineties. The second is the lively heavy metal-like instrument music of Generation X.  While Bond handles the first part, Dennewitz takes care of the second part.

Both of them have been striving hard for a breakthrough for almost a decade. Their idea of fusion music, although an original one, had few takers at the beginning. However, they continued to create their brand of music gamely. They first burst into the music scene with the number “No Well OK Maybe Just A Little“. Many music enthusiasts noticed the clever mixing of vintage music with funky instrumental music. Although its popularity was limited to those who eat, drink, and sleep indie-rock music, it was good enough to attract some stage shows and concerts for the duo.

They rediscovered themselves through the stage shows and concerts. They found the live performance as the best medium to express their art. The experience of their live stage performance was once memorably described as “exuberant seizure”. Their live shows triggered frenzied dancing; but they managed to create a mood of vintage grace and charm through their songs, as well. They became extremely popular with the release of Songs About Music and the rest is history.

The Year Without A Summer

Their latest album has already received rave reviews both by the blogs of indie-rock extremists and the mainstream media that care for this brand of music. Most reviewers seem to have fallen in love with the “Maya Blue” number. It is a rhythmic psychedelic number with an old world charm.  The best part is that they keep things simple and melodious without any abstract ideas and complex orchestration. Unlike the numbers in the Songs About Music, the numbers in their latest offering are not all-out dance numbers. These songs still make you get up and hit the dance floor. However, an incorrigible introvert will also feel comfortable listening to these numbers.
