Well, after nearly a two-year absence, I’m bringing the Vinyl Finds feature back, for the first time on Off the Dial!
For those of you who’ve been following us since our kMNR days, you may remember the Vinyl Finds feature was introduced in 2007. It’s where we review vinyls we’ve picked up along the way; some of them rare, some not so much (especially since the vinyl trend continues to grow), all of them very cool. Now that I’ve dusted off the record player and moved it into the Subterranean Homesick Studio, hopefully this feature will be more prominent from this point forward.
These two finds were the result of visiting a local independent Calgary record store with the intent of purchasing the latest Madcowboys CD. I walked away with three excellent pieces of music instead of one.
Motherfuckers ~ I Wanna Be A Cop…So I Can Fuck You Up!! 7″
Source ~ Sloth Records
Released on the band’s own Handsome Dan Records and on a very cool green and red splattered translucent wax, this 7″ contains six cuts; the title track, “Living in Fear”, “Fish Fucking”, “Can’t Slow Down”, “Kill My Boss” and “Get Off the Stage”. It also features a hilarious hand-drawn cover depicting a punk wearing a Run DMC jacket with his pants down and the fist of an officer right up his ass. It looks like it’s Calgary in the background so maybe this actually happened. I certainly hope not.
Of course, all six tracks are trademark Motherfuckers songs; blistering and as punk as punk can get. Brilliant and worth every penny of the $7 I paid for it. Oh, and let’s not forget the free Motherfuckers sticker that came with it.

Madcowboys/Colin Decker Free Fall 7″ Split Release
Source ~ Sloth Records
Released on the New Black record label (and based on the catalogue number, it’s the label’s second release), this Madcowboys/Colin Decker Free Fall split 7″ release comes on a nice yellow wax. The two Madcowboys tracks are listed as “Shackles” and “Fucked Up”. Having just reviewed the latest Madcowboys full-length, I know that they both come from the album with the former being titled “girls in shackles” and the latter not being listed on the CD.
Sadly, I know very little of CDFF except that they are a great Calgary punk band that’s been around for a while. Their two tracks are “Broken and Used” (which is so short and fast that if you were distracted for twenty seconds, you’d have to re-cue the needle) and “We Didn’t Push You”. As far as I can tell from the CDFF web site, these two songs don’t appear anywhere else.
At $9, it’s a bit pricey but seeing as you’re supporting not one but two bands and the music is just fantastic, it’s worth the extra coin.
Heard either or both of these vinyls? Let us know what you think and leave a comment below!
