System To Mesmerize Us In The Coming Months

There has been plenty of talk about the new System of a Down albums coming out this year.  As previously reported here, the band plans to release two albums; "Mesmerize" in the spring and "Hypnotize" by late summer or autumn.  Fan sites are reporting a release date as early as March 1st, while message boards are stating an April 26th release date with the first single, "B.Y.O.B." hitting airwaves on March 1st.

Sadly, no official word has come from the band themselves, so we'll just have to wait and see.

The band's official web site does however confirm a number of shows in Europe in late spring, early summer starting on May 27th in Lisbon, Portugal where they will play at the Super Bock Super Rock concert.  No North American dates have been announced, but this news seems to lend nicely to a report that the band will spend the next two years touring.

Guitarist Daron Malakian spoke with Rolling Stone magazine about the Australian and New Zealand dates last month for the Big Day Out festival, and their subsequent plans to tour for the next two years.  "We're going out and doing as many shows as we can.  It'll be constant touring for two years." Malakian said.

He also spoke of his two favourite songs on the forthcoming albums.  He considers "Lost In Hollywood" quote, "one of the best songs I've ever written."  He also commented on the second album, "Hypnotize"'s title track and the brutal "Kill Rock & Roll".  His second favourite song?  That would be the recently leaked "Cigaro".

The new albums are currently being mixed in Los Angeles by Andy Wallace (who's worked with Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed and others) and the group once again enlisted the help of producer Rick Rubin for production duties.  The band previously worked with Rubin on all of the three releases.

Father Jack White?

This week on CBC's 60 Minutes, Jack White of The White Stripes revealed his intention to become a priest in his early teens.  He was accepted into a Wisconsin seminary but changed his mind because he had just gotten a new amplifier in his bedroom and didn't think he could bring it with him.

He also spoke of his collaboration with country star Loretta Lynn, stating that she is "the greatest female singer-songwriter of the 20th century".  White made a dedication to her on the band's "White Blood Cells" release and later produced Lynn's Grammy-nominated "Van Lear Rose" album.

The Arcade Fire Are Busy Boys

Montreal's The Arcade Fire have experienced a year that's being compared to the ascent to fame that The Strokes and The White Stripes experienced, and it all started with the release of their last album, "Funeral".

They've just completed a coast-to-coast North American tour which involved them in filming for a DVD in San Francisco and playing a Talking Heads cover with David Byrne in New York City.  They also appeared on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, playing "Neighbourhood #2 (Laika)".  They've even been nominated twice for the Juno's and won the New Artist Of The Year award at The Plug Awards in New York.

So, you'd think they'd be up for some time off, right?  Well, they are resting for about a month...well, except for Will "who is doing homework" while lead singer Win Butler and Regine will spread the word to people in France, the UK and Scandinavia on the origins of their name.  The latter appears to be part of a small European tour in March.

Butler also stated on the band's web-site that they plan on playing a few shows in Montreal and Toronto later in April, followed by an appearance at this year's Coachella festival (April 20th-May 1st).  They intend to go on a real European tour after that.

The Dogfather Up On Rape Charges

A few weeks back, Snoop Dogg files a lawsuit against a woman who was claiming that she was sexually assaulted by his entourage.  He was suing her for blackmail, but she's apparently struck back now.

Kylie Bell is a 36 year old make up artist who's worked on HBO's Six Feet Under and was present at a January 2003 taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live, which Snoop appeared on.  She alleges that she was "incapacitated" by a drink that was supposedly champagne, given to her by one of Snoop's associates.  She then claims that she was raped by Calvin Broadus (Snoop's real name) and four of his crew.

She was advised by family members not to press charges against the famour rapper because he had street gang affiliations.  Four months after the incident, she contact Jimmy Kimmel Live and informed them of the rape.  Once she went to the show, an ABC investment subsidiary began covering her living expenses.  After they stopped paying her, she began receiving money from Snoop himself while both their legal teams negotiated.

Since then, the two parties have been unable to come to a settlement.

Joe Perry To Release First Solo Album In 21 Years

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry is finalizing his self titled solo album for a May 3rd release.  It's been 21 years since the guitarist has gone solo, and the album will include 11 original songs, two of which are instrumentals.  The album will also include covers of The Doors' "The Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man".

Perry appeared on The Howard Stern Show last year and previewed some of the material.

He handled the lead vocals through the album, a change from his previous three solo albums with The Joe Perry Project in the early 1980's.  With those releases, he used a different singer on each album.  This time around he played all guitar, bass and keyboard pieces and co-produced the album with Paul Caruso.  Caruso played some drums and engineered the album.  Joining them was friend Chris Noise, "an old-school analog synth guy" who plays the string part on "Ten Years".  Noise teaches at Boston's Berklee School of Music.

The track-listing is available at the below article:
