SH!T The Turrettes F#CK Return With A$$ A Bang!

Last Friday night (February 11th), Calgary band The Turrettes returned to the stage at Brew Brothers, and what a show it was.  Although they were one of three bands on the bill and were second to hit the stage, they were easily the most impressive and most lively of the three acts.

The band's unique style of punk-rock made it easy for the kids to rip it up and display an impressive mosh pit which some would say got a little out of control.  However, no one got hurt and the casualties were limited only to a lost watch and a couple of broken bottles/pint glasses.

The band played material from their 2004 release, "Sindroam" including a cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and even some new material on their forthcoming release (which the band have been busy recording in the past few weeks).  One of the more memorable tunes was "Stormin' Norman the Mormon Doorman".  Most of their songs have a tongue-in-cheek feel to them, and their fast-paced punk style is mostly playful making for a fun live experience.

There's no indication as to when the band will be releasing the new album, but you can catch them again next Saturday, February 26th at the Distillery.

Reznor Releases New NIN Album Track Listing

The official release date of the new Nine Inch Nails album "With Teeth" is May 3rd, but you can find out the track listing as the man responsible for NIN, Trent Reznor, revealed it on the band's web site.

Last year, Reznor described the new album to Rolling Stone magazine as "twelve good punches in the face".  I suppose since NIN fans have to wait so long between releases that Reznor decided to make it a 'baker's dozen' as "With Teeth" will contain thirteen tracks.

We've previously reported to you that Reznor has firmed up his live line-up with plans for a tour in support of the new material.  There are only five shows confirmed on the web site in England and the US, with them headlining this year's Coachella Festival.  There's no indication that they'll be heading North to Canada and there won't be much of the older NIN material showcased on the upcoming tour.  Here is the full track listing:

"All The Love In The World"
"You Know What You Are?"
"The Collector"
"The Hand That Feeds"
"Love Is Not Enough"
"Every Day Is Exactly The Same"
"With Teeth"
"Only"
"Getting Smaller"
"Sunspots"
"The Line Begins To Blur"
"Beside You In Time"
"Right Where It Belongs"

American Bad-Ass Arrested

The 'American Bad-Ass', Kid Rock was arrested on Wednesday for punching a disc jockey at Christie's Cabaret, a strip club near downtown Nashville.   He was released on $3,000 bail on an assault charge which carries a maximum punishment of one year in jail.  As he left court, he said "Everything is wonderful.  It was a beautiful night."

Apparently, the squabble was over the selection of music.  There were no major injuries, but television footage outside the club showed the DJ sporting a welt on his face and his busted eyeglasses in his hand.

One can only hope that he doesn't repeat his actions if he decides to visit Calgary anytime soon.  If so, it would be in one's best interest to start playing copious amounts of Kid Rock music, instantly!

Rock was in Nashville for a memorial service for songwriter Merle Kilgore which was held on Tuesday.  Police reported that he was very co-operative when they picked him up at an apartment he was staying at.  Rock stated that he dodged the police because he wanted to sober up before being booked.

Sign #752 The Apocalypse Is Upon Us

It's bad enough that we have American and Canadian Idol.  It got a little scary when word got out about the search for a new INXS lead singer using a reality show.  The latest musical reality search is just downright absurd.

Search for the Pearl is a series that will search for the next Janis Joplin.  'Pearl' was Joplin's nickname.

The winner will tour world-wide with Big Brother, the Holding Company, the Kozmic Blues Band and the Full Tilt Boogie Band, all former bands that played for Joplin.

Joplin was best known for her hits "Piece of my Heart" and "Me and Bobby McGee", a Kris Kristofferson cover.  She experienced a brief yet successful career before succumbing to a heroin overdose in 1970.  She was 27.

Led Zeppelin Finally Recognized; Grohl A Happy Man

They never won a Grammy when they were together, but Led Zeppelin have finally obtained the recognition they deserved with a lifetime achievement award.  Accepting the award at a luncheon the day before the Grammy's were guitarist Jimmy Page, keyboardist/bassist John Paul Jones and the late John Bonham's two children.  Robert Plant was unable to attend as he's rehearsing for a tour, so he sent in a video message.

Page expressed no resentment for the belated award in an earlier interview, stating that the band's eclectic sound was likely too complex for Grammy voters to comprehend.

Joining Page and Jones at their table was Dave Grohl.  Grohl, who's finalizing the next Foo Fighter's release for a June 8th release, had come up with a wish list of musicians to have on the new release which included Jones.  When Jones responded, saying that he would be happy to play bass on one track, he also invited Grohl to join them at the Grammy ceremony.

Grohl has been quoted as being a huge fan of Bonham's drumming and one can easily hear that influence in much of his drum work while he was with Nirvana.

In Stores Next Week

Next week will see new albums from Kings of Leon ("Aha Shake Heartbreak"), "Beekeeper" from Tori Amos, former Thrush Helmit lead vocalist Joel Plaskett with "La De Da", a CD/DVD release from The Chieftans titled "Live From Dublin - A Tribute To Derek Bell" (who is best known as the harpist for the band), "Real Illusions: Reflections" from Steve Vai (who once toured with Frank Zappa), and Widespread Panic's "Live at Myrtle Beach".

In The Works

The new Coldplay album may not yet have a title, but at least we can expect it to arrive sometime in June of this year.  That's slightly later than originally anticipated, but what can you expect when the initial recording sessions were put aside.  The band is in no hurry to finish it simply because they know it'll mean another vigorous tour, but they've realized that without a self-imposed deadline, it may not be completed for quite some time.

They may be a 'virtual' band, but we will finally have new material from the Gorillaz.  The new album, which is expected to hit stores in May is titled "Demon Days" and the first single will be "Feelgood Inc."  It's been almost four years since the band's self-titled debut release.  The band is a creation of Blur's Damon Albarn, producer Dan The Automater and Jamie Hewlett (illustrator of Tank Girl).

Hitting The Stage

Velvet Revolver are coming to Canada, starting with a show in Hamilton, ON on March 24th and stopping in Saskatoon, SK (March 27th), Calgary, AB (March 28th), Edmonton, AB (March 29th) and finishing in Vancouver, BC on March 31st.  Tickets for most shows are already on sale.

Although it was announced a year ago the Mark Lanegan would no longer be a part of the Queens of the Stone Age line-up any longer, he made a surprise appearance with the band on February 14th in Milan, Italy.  The former Screaming Trees front-man sang on eight songs at the Transilvania Club.  This show marked the official launch of the QOTSA tour, even though they performed a gig in Los Angeles as The Clocks earlier this month.  They'll continue playing throughout this month with two shows in one night in London, England on March 3rd.  QOTSA will also play several shows in Canada later in March.

Although it's been some time since he has performed there, Gordon Lightfoot will return to Massey Hall in Toronto for four shows, May 18-21.  Tickets went on sale yesterday.  Lightfoot has made the most solo performances the venue has ever seen of any performer.
