Video of the Day: Gallows ~ “Cross of Lorraine”

Watford, England hardcore punk outfit Gallows are a determined lot. After the departure of front-man and founding memeber Frank Carter in 2011, many fans were concerned this would signal the end of the group. Instead, Carter went off to do his own thing in Pure Love while the group went in search of a new singer.

It was later in 2011 that rumours started to surface that Alexisonfire guitarist Wade MacNeil would take Carter’s place and that was all but confirmed when AOF made the surprising announcement that they were disbanding. NacNeil’s entry was made official and Gallows got to work on moving forward. By December, they released the Death is Birth EP and immediately got to work on their new album. Ten months later and we were finally treated to their third album.

The group are currently on tour having recently blasted through several Canadian cities. If you missed the show, here’s a taste of what you could have seen.

I’m especially impressed with Wade’s Hot Water Music tattoo. Nice.

Video of the Day: Fucked Up ~ “Inside a Frame”

Although I can’t say I’ve been on board for a long time (not for lack of interest but for lack of knowledge) but I’m quietly a big Fucked Up fan. The Toronto hardcore punk group has garnered accolades and even won the prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2009 for their album the Chemistry of Common Life.

This week, label Matador Records announced the band’s release of a new video for “Inside a Frame”. The track is from last year’s release David Comes to Life, which in itself is absolutely fantastic.

The video is quite interesting; not something you’d expect from a hardcore punk band but when it comes to Fucked Up, you really should abandon all preconceptions and just go with it.

Video of the Day: Muse ~ “Follow Me”

This week, Muse released their latest video for “Follow Me” off of this years album the 2nd Law.

This video just makes me want to see them live again. Really badly.

Although I’m not thoroughly blown away by the 2nd Law, this is a great track that would be even better if it were a bit longer.

Muse are currently on tour with a scheduled stop in Calgary at the Saddledome on February 2nd, 2013.

Video of the Day: 12.12.12 Sandy Relief Not-Nirvana Reunion feat. Sir Paul McCartney

So, the dust has settled. The rumours were kinda true. Paul McCartney took to the stage at MSG last night for the 12.12.12 Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief and he did in fact play with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. According to McCartney, he did in fact jam with the three recently and only realized he was jamming with the surviving members of Nirvana halfway into the session. It just wasn’t a Nirvana song, so I’m going to go ahead and say that this was not really a Nirvana reunion. In my books, in order for it to qualify as one, they would’ve had to have played a Nirvana track.

Paul is old. Mind you, Krist is looking pretty aged as well.

Grohl is simply put, a beast on the kit and as Calgary radio personality James “Newsboy” Callsen stated on facebook last night after the performance, “…I like you best when you play the drums. Can you do that more often?” Can’t say that I blame James.

Rumoured Nirvana Reunion to Feature Paul McCartney???

Well, this is one way to wake a sleeping beast. After months of neglecting this site, I’ve decided now is the time to re-emerge and tell you about a rumour regarding tonight’s 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy Relief concert.

According to the UK tabloid the Sun, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear will reunite as Nirvana at the show tonight, with Paul McCartney taking the role of front-man. Apparently Grohl asked McCartney to swing by the studios recently and jam with “some mates”. That turned out to be Novoselic and Smear. Now, you must take this with a grain of salt considering the Sun isn’t the epitome of reliability. It is after all a tabloid.

The official line reads like this: Bon Jovi, Eric Claptop, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, the Who and Paul McCartney. You can watch the concert streaming live on YouTube (video embedded below).

If this proves to be true, it will be EPIC, even if my wife thinks the notion of McCartney fronting Nirvana is akin to your cool uncle jamming with your high school band. If not, it’s a fun thing to ponder all day and garner more attention for the concert. Plus, I would put money down that Grohl makes an appearance on SNL this weekend in one form or another, considering that McCartney is the musical guest.

Canada’s rock darlings the Tragically Hip released a new single last month called “At Transformation”, the first track from a new album supposedly titled And Now for Plan A set for a fall release.

Last week, the band revealed the music video for the track which not only features vocalist Gord Downie reciting the opening passage to Metaphors on Vision by Stan Brakhage, but also incorporates many of the techniques Brakhage used in his visionary, non-narrative films.

The track itself is excellent, harkening to the style of days past and if this is an indication of what the rest of tha album will have to offer, I can’t wait.

This June, Calgary Metalfest will adorn the confines of four venues to play host to a lengthy list of metal bands from around Alberta and even the world.

Organized by Big Nate Productions, Metalfest starts with a kickoff party at Vern’s on Jun 7th followed by a show at Dickens Pub on June 8th and concurrent shows at the New Black and the Distillery on June 9th. Bands include Oh Shit, Wormbox, Gales of Avalon, Stab Twist Pull, Bloated Pig, Exit Strategy, Blackest Sin, Kataplexis, We Found the Body and an international mystery band to play the Distillery.

Raelyn Ross of the Stevey Rae Show interviewed organizer (and Kyoktys bassist, naturally playing the festival) Nate Reno. Watch the video here;

Video of the Day: Beastie Boys ~ “Gratitude”

More than a day after hearing the sad news of MCA‘s passing, it’s still a tough pill to swallow. I’ll be honest here; I was moved to tears yesterday. I’ve always been a big fan of the Beastie Boys but I never thought Adam Yauch‘s passing would affect me this much.

Watching all the tributes pour in through the social networks (because frankly, mainstream television was largely lacking in any real coverage that would do him any justice) proved how influential Yauch was, not only in music but in film and most importantly, in humanitarian efforts. Maybe that’s why his death had such an impact.

The question was posed yesterday by one of the music mags, what’s your favourite B-Boy tune? I’m sure I’m not alone in saying picking just one is near impossible but after Jimmy Eat World‘s tweet including the below video, I immediately thought of the time my friend Dean taught me how to play that kick-ass bass line.

Today, in the middle of emergency call-outs to work and family life which were soundtracked by the Beasties catalogue, I ventured into the Subterranean Homesick Studio where I infrequently record the podcast and pulled out the acoustic bass, just to show my son I could still play that bass line and show him a small piece of Adam’s genius that will forever live on with us.

RIP Adam Yauch

I never thought I would be affected like this. I received the awful news of Adam Yauch‘s (AKA MCA of the Beastie Boys) passing within the hour and I’ve been super bummed. I only wish I could keep it together to give him a proper tribute but all I’ve got is this:

R.I.P. Adam. You will be sorely missed.
